COMMODITIZATION,
COMMODIFICATION
Commodification (or
commoditization) is the transformation of goods and services (or
things that may not normally be regarded as goods or services)
into a commodity.
Product development industry uses the "Commoditization"
to depict change of position of your product when your product
is the same or have many similarities to everyone else's product
and/or if your product becomes reverse engineered, emulated, or
becomes target for knock-offs industry.
If your product is for
mass consumer use, its appeal, price and brand are main factors
which will either distinguish your product or put you in the
price battle with competitors. While there is not golden rule
for success products designed with great attention to design
help companies create recognizable brand setting the stage to
offer higher value products and avoiding commoditization.
Innovation and Design are what leading companies (E.g. Apple) do
to avoid sliding into commoditization. Innovation and design
help increase the value of the product.
